The Paintings I Almost Forgot About

Something unexpected happened this summer: several paintings I made years ago found new homes. It made me look at them again.
I had almost forgotten some of these paintings. They belonged to earlier moments in my practice, made while I was thinking about different things, trying different approaches, perhaps before I fully understood what I was looking for.
But looking at them now, I was struck by how much was already there.
The constructed spaces. The tension between something carefully staged and something that feels slightly out of control. The question of how an image can be both relatively precise and somehow unstable.
These are questions I’m still working through in my paintings today.
There is something fascinating about looking backwards as a painter.
Ideas that seemed incidental at the time begin to look like threads running through the practice.
So I’ve been revisiting some of these earlier paintings, alongside more recent work and a selection of prints.
